Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Accessing Information in Africa: It's Your Right - Documentary

Produced by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Regional Secretariat) and fesmedia Africa of the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung (FES), this documentary looks at the importance of access to information in Africa. The documentary is intended to be a campaign resource for access to information advocates.
The video looks at why access to information is important for issues such as advancing human rights, health, governance and education. It is a prerequisite for transparency and accountability of governments, as a means of safeguarding citizens against mismanagement and corruption, and facilitating people’s ability to make informed decisions about their lives.
It also looks at what has been achieved so far with a particular focus on the work of the African Platform on Access to Information (APAI) project, and ends off with information on what organisations and individuals can do to improve access to information in their country.
The video has three parts: Part 1 - The importance of access to information for you and me Part 2 - Progress on access to information in Africa Part 3 - Improve access to information in your Country
