The Communication Initiative

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. 

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future. 

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction. 

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

Becas para Seminario Ambiental

El Centro Internacional para Periodistas realizará del 8 al 11 de marzo de 2007 el "Seminario para Periodistas Desarrollo Sustentable:
Cobertura del Noroeste de México", que tiene como objetivo mejorar la cobertura periodística sobre el desarrollo sustentable en la región del Golfo de California. El programa se desarrolla en colaboración con el Centro de Periodismo y Ética Pública (CEPET), y el Centro Knight para el Periodismo Ambiental de la Universidad del Estado de Michigan.

20 periodistas de distintos Estados de México serán seleccionados para participar del evento, donde aprenderán nuevas técnicas del periodismo de investigación a través de sesiones prácticas con especialistas en la cobertura de temas ambientales y expertos en el desarrollo sustentable. El seminario-taller iniciará en la ciudad de Hermosillo y luego se trasladará a la Bahía Kino, Guaymas y Puerto Libertad, donde los periodistas conocerán de primera mano los últimos proyectos de desarrollo sustentable que se realizan en la región del Golfo de California norte.

Esta ocasión las sesiones se enfocarán en la información sobre la construcción de la carretera costera, el desarrollo inmobiliario, las políticas de turismo, agricultura, acuicultura, agua e infraestructura energética; así como sobre el fenómeno de cambio climático.

Los participantes deben:
  • Estar comprometidos con la cobertura de temas ambientales.
  • Haber tenido alguna experiencia en la cobertura de temas a profundidad o sobre desarrollo sustentable.
  • Querer desarrollar habilidades para compartir con sus colegas en la redacción los conocimientos adquiridos en el seminario.
  • Trabajar para medios escritos o electrónicos (Radio, TV, Internet).
Se debe diligenciar el formulario de solicitud de becas, disponible en la página web del CEPET. Enviar en formato PDF dos ejemplos del trabajo periodístico, firmar el acuerdo de condiciones del programa y enviarlo los documentos vía fax o correo electrónico. Todos los materiales deben enviarse al Centro Internacional para Periodistas (ICFJ) o al Centro de Periodismo y Ética Pública (CEPET).
