After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.
The Drum Beat Network - Supporting your Staffing and Revenue generation activities - and supporting us!
The Communication Initiative/Drum Beat network and partnership is honoured to support your work as part of 90,000 in the network (70% non-OECD) and 1 million user sessions the past 12 months (65% non-OECD). We are committed to free and equitable engagement. But where your organisation utlises The CI's capacities and draws direct benefit we offer the following. These support The CI/Drum Beat to support you. You can support us at the same time.
As a partnership driven space for social networking, knowledge sharing and peer-support, we seek to support your efforts to improve your effectiveness related to your development priorities. Feedback through network reviews indicates significant effectiveness and potential.
Ensuring that The CI is freely available and equitable for all to share, access, converse and engage each other is vitally important. If your organisation is not a CI Partner and you feel that you gain value from The CI/Drum Beat process, please do consider the options above and below.
With many thanks - Warren
OPTIONS (Key links and core information- details follow for each option)
CI Associates - making a small contribution (a scale from US$100 for individuals to US$5,000 for major organisations) if you feel you gain benefit from The CI for improving your work and wish to contribute. Please discuss in your team.
Job vacancies - prices from US$125. Please ask your human resources staff to review and consider.
It would be excellent if you and/or your organisation could join theAssociates programme. This provides the opportunity for many organisations to make small contributions that complement the larger investments by a small group of Partner agencies.
If you and/or your organisation wish to join the Associates programme, which provides the opportunity for small contributions from many organisations, that would be excellent. The suggested costs follow, along with examples of present Associates. To join and pay online, please click here or contact Victoria Martin with your proposed payment or any questions you may have - e.g., how many people from my organisation are involved?
Thank you for considering this. The more we can share the financial load of The CI/Drum Beat process across a larger number of organisations and offices using this process, the greater our chance of maintaining and growing - in all sorts of exciting ways - this open-to-all, 24-hour-per-day, comprehensive sharing and engagement process.
High-quality staffing is essential for all local, national, and international development issues. The CI provides agencies with the opportunity to reach highly relevant, potential staff across all development issues in all countries. And as The CI network has such a large percentage of communicators, the initial, direct reach is amplified by people in the network further communicating to their networks, staff groups, and students.
There are two main vehicles for the Job Vacancies service and opportunity through The CI: The Job Classifieds siteand a bi-weekly Classifieds newsletter to the network.
You can submit your job vacancies here or contact Victoria Martin to submit the vacancies and/or raise any questions or issues.
Many organisations - perhaps yours is one - conduct fee-based training courses, conferences, roundtables, and other kinds of meetings. To be successful, these experiences require relevant people to be aware of them and hopefully to attend and participate. Such events often provide much needed revenue for the organisations hosting and organising them.
The CI provides a venue to advertise and promote these training courses and other events. As this is a network with a significant percentage of communicators and media people, there is good additional coverage as those folks communicate to their networks and staff teams.
You can submit your training courses and other events here or contact Victoria Martin to submit your information, ask questions, or raise any issues. The costs are as follows:
Consultants and consulting organisations provide a valuable role in local, national, and international development - with often required specialised skills and always important external perspectives to add to the primary sources of local knowledge and analysis.
There are four main CI activities to highlight consultancy services: a Consultants theme site; the main Classifiedssite; inclusion in the bi-weekly Classifieds e-magazine to the network; and a block that highlights consultants across much of The CI site - click here for an example
You can submit your consultancy services outlines here or contact Victoria Martin to submit your information, ask questions, or raise any issues. The costs are as follows:
Knowledge is essential for improved development action. If you and/or your organisation produce for sale books, training manuals, videos, booklets, or other publications, please consider marketing these through The CI's books and other publications process.
The CI network provides a venue to ensure that people engaged in international development are aware of your publications and will consider purchasing them. As The CI is a network with a significant percentage of communicators and media people, there is good additional coverage as those folks communicate to their networks and staff teams.

Organisations issuing RFPs are seeking a broad but relevant group of organisations that will review and respond to their request. In particular, there is increasing pressure and requirement to broaden the base of organisations that are responding to RFPs.
The CI network of 90,000 people and 1 million users per annum across all development issues, strategies, and countries provides a venue to ensure that people engaged in international development are aware of your RFPs and will consider submitting a response. 70% of the network are in non-OECD countries. As The CI is a network with a significant percentage of communicators and media people, there is good additional coverage as those folks communicate to their networks and staff teams.
