Development action with informed and engaged societies

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter.

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

If you are unable to join us in Panama, we still want to hear from you. Please contribute your thoughts by following this link: https://redcap.link/CommunicationInitiative2026 or reaching out to ci_surveys@commint.com

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Project - UK

An organisation of members 50+ years old who set out to prove that many older people can live longer & maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Based in a large housing complex in Ely, Wales, positive intergenerational awareness is also an important & ongoing aspect of this project.
Communication Strategies
This is an activity based group with a focus on adult education. Weelky speakers are brought in from many sectors of the community & many Healthy, Wealthy & Wise (HWW) members participate in the annual Ely Festival as performers & help with stage events. Intergenerational relationships have been kindled over time with school reading programmes & the help of the Small World Theatre & their Generation X puppet programme to change negative attitudes between the youth & the elderly.
Development Issues
Ageing, Population, Health
Key Points
The HWW Project wanted to show local authorities & others that it was possible for the ageing to live longer, healthier lives with the consequences of decreasing health care & social services costs to the community. With the rising cost of health care & declining health & social services, this programme is very positive. Activities such as continued education, music, dance, puppetry, travel & participation in community events, offered by the project, maintain a healthy brain & keep HWW members involved & engaged in life. Ely, outside Cardiff, is one of the largest housing estates in Europe. Poverty & umemployment are commom, with a full spectrum of social problems & criminal activities. "Car crime by under age drivers, muggings & a lack of respect for the elderly by gangs of young people have been identified as problems for the older residents of the estate". An attempt to rectify this problem by creating intergenerational opportunities is a focus of the HWW. The puppet project & Generation x has met some of the need here & members from HWW have also involved themselves in reading programmes with children in local schools. The HWW Project aims to establish The Healthy Living and Positive Ageing Centre in the first few years of this Millennium. Among many exciting programmes, Alternative & Complementary Medicines & Treatments, Intergenerational Activities, an Intergenerational Volunteer Bureau & a Positive Ageing Programme is on the Centre'sagenda.
Partners

Funded largely by central Government under it's "Good Old Age Initiative".The intergenerational puppet project was created by Small World Theatre (SWT) & sponsored by the Nationwide Foundation with support from Age Concern, Cardiff & the Cardiff County Coucil Leisure & Lifelong Learning Department
