Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

  • FGM is a human rights violation.
  • 130 million girsl and women alive today have undergone some form of FGM. 
  • In 4 countries - Somalia, Guina, Djibouti, Egypt - over 90% of the female population has been cut.
  • Dramatic reductions have been accompilshed in many countries including Liberia, Kenya, Nigeria and Central African Republic.
  • But 30 million more girls alive today may be cut in the next decade.
  • 66% of women and men living in 29 countries with the significant practice of FGM think cutting should stop.
  • Public dialogue is crucial for community wide change.
  • More than 700 million women alive today were married as children.
  • 1 in 3 were marrined when they were under 15 years of age.
  • In Malawi (as example) 62% of wom with no formal education were child brides. 
  • Child brides have more children and less health care.
  • In Niger only 11% of women married before 15years delivered their first child in a health facility - compared to 43% of those married at 18years or older.
  • Practice of child marriage is declining - slowly.
