Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Social Impact Media Awards 2013

DEEDA Productions is a documentary production company and impact agency specialising in the global development sector. The Social Impact Media Awards seeks to promote the stories of independent filmmakers, grassroots change-makers, and humanitarian organisations that too often remain overlooked and to provide a springboard for creative and educational media to inspire change.

SIMA 2013 is looking for original, wise, brave, and creative productions that will increase the awareness of viewers to global injustices, to the resilience of humans facing depravation, to the politics of international aid, and to the efforts and agents of change in developing nations. SIMA will celebrate the work of filmmakers that raise important questions and inspire people to reflect on the meaning and potential of help for those in need.

Winners of Special Jury Awards will receive cash prises per each category. Winners and nominees will receive placement on the SIMA homepage and affiliated media outlets. They will also have the option be used in SIMA’s educational and humanitarian distribution network, which facilitates worldwide screenings of documentary films for community groups and aid organisations to encourage local community activism.
