Established in 1986, the primary aim of Khanya College is to assist various constituencies within working class and poor communities to respond to the challenges posed by the forces of economic and political globalization. This involves providing education which is relevant to the needs of historically oppressed communities; strengthening community based organizations, trade unions and non-governmental organizations; and contributing to a process of social change and development. The College strives to operate democratically and accountably with as little hierarchy as possible. It is also committed to a gender-sensitive environment, fair and progressive labour standards, and to a relatively flat wage structure.
ObjectivesKhanya College has three core objectives that frame all of their programs and activities:
There are nine program areas that encompass the work of Khanya College, which include an annual Winter School; an ICT and Community Empowerment Program; a Strategy Centre for the Practice and Theory of Social Movements; a Centre for Labour Education; a Southern Africa Solidarity Centre; a Journal Project; and a Working Class History Program. While gender considerations are mainstreamed through all of their work, the College also had a Gender and Women’s Empowerment Program, which seeks to contribute to raising consciousness about gender equality among progressive mass organizations and social movements, and assisting these formations to develop approaches to overcome gender inequality.
Khanya College services constituencies and organizations all over South Africa, in Southern Africa, as well as other parts of the world. In particular the programs of the college all emphasize the importance of facilitating links and solidarity among the social movements and mass organizations in the Southern African region.
Capacity on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality As an institution for training on social justice and activism, Khanya College has a specific gender program and has some strong advocates for gender equality. The gender program supports programs such as training courses for gender activists, workshops on gender issues, research and publications on gender issues and women’s struggles in the context of globalization. The College has recently developed a sexual harassment policy and code of conduct, and is currently developing a gender policy.
